As I began to approach fifty my interest in the subject of menopause became paramount to the point of reading a number of books over the next few years on the subject. Beginning with Germaine Greers "The Change" to Gail Sheehy "The Silent Passage" to the updated "Menopause Naturally" by Sadja Greenwood, M.D. By the time I made my way through this last book it had been nearly a year since Id had a period, which was the amount of time my physician had recommended elapse before I check in with her regarding a possible course of action. When I did end up in her office to discuss the state of my health, I was very stressed out and that would be putting it mildly. I was in the process of losing a job, that Id worked at over twelve years as a special education teacher and co-ordinator with severely physically and mentally challenged children and adults, due to an unexpected move by the governor to turn a state facility into a boot camp for wayward youth. So there was a lot of change going on in many areas of my life. I was under pressure at work in helping co-workers adjust to the closure and also prepare for and ease the transition for clients who would be moving to new homes throughout the state. So in the midst of all this I went from the occasional headache to experiencing my first full fledged migraine complete with flashing lights. In addition to this I was not sleeping well as my body temperature seemed to be in constant flux during the night, one minute being too hot for blankets and the next cold. Fortunately day time hot flashes were not a problem and this may be due to the fact that I maintained a rather steady hatha yoga practice over the years and had been big on nutritional supplements most of my life. I cannot imagine where I would have ended up without the yoga practice and the calm that it did bring to my life given the amount of stress my job and family responsibilities placed on me for many years. It really was and continues to be my saving grace. My physician checked me over and gave me a refillable (1 year) prescription for progestin with estrogen (Premarin). The first month taking this combo my period started back up, complete with premenstrual swelling breasts, weight gain, headache and some mild cramping during my periods which lasted about 3 or 4 days. And worse, being a vegetarian, I was more than a little concerned about using a product that came from the urine of mares who were trapped in an endless cycle of impregnation and confinement year after year. To obtain the estrogen-rich urine needed for Premarin, tens of thousands of pregnant mares are tethered in tiny stalls for months at a time without adequate exercise, water, or veterinary care. For most mares, the cycle of impregnation and confinement continues year after year until they become barren or lame, at which time they are sold for slaughter. Everything is energy, vibration, frequency and taking the prescribed pill did not seem to be right either ethically or physically. For me the entire scenario was far removed from a natural approach to aging and a life change that I preferred to embrace rather than fight. So I kept reading everything I could find on the subject and by the time a year had gone by I happened on to Christiane Northrup, M.D and her ideas regarding a more natural approach with progesterone. By now I had relocated, was in the middle of a career change and needed to find a physician who would write me a prescription for the progesterone that she recommended in her book. I made an appointment with a women physician and presented my plan for the natural progesterone. She had never heard of it and wrote me out a prescription for Estrace; however, she did agree to look over any information I could bring her on the subject. This was a few years ago in small town America and so I was grateful for her open mindedness. By the end of the month she phoned in a prescription to the formulary pharmacy recommended in Dr. Northrup's book for natural progesterone capsule form. I felt relatively
good about this approach to the change; however, after about 6 months
I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils and at the same time a
book by John R. Lee, M.D. "What Your Doctor May Not Tell you about
Menopause". After reading that book I began using the natural
progesterone cream that Young Living was marketing at the time. Transdermally
applied progesterone seemed a more efficient way to go in combating PMS
symptoms. Young Living went on to improve this product and now offers
Prenolone and Prenolone +, a natural cream that can be used by both men
and women. Prenolone is a high-quality, all natural body cream containing
pregnenolone, a precursor to progesterone, estrogen and DHEA. Prenolone
+ body cream has the same high-quality, natural ingredients as Prenolone
moisturizing cream with the addition of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone).
DHEA production peaks near age 20 and steadily declines with age. In my
view this is a quantum leap ahead of any other replacement therapy currently
being offered on the market today. In regard to my own use of Prenolone Plus please know, as with all things in life this product does not operate in a vacuum; rather it is just one part of the whole picture in working with the energy field to promote health in body, mind and spirit.
